You might love your bathroom, but do you ever wish you had just a few more square feet to move around in it? A small bathroom can feel quaint and cosy when you’re relaxing in the tub, but it can also create some design challenges. If yours isn’t quite as big as you’d like it to be, don’t worry! Today, we’re sharing seven easy ways to help your bathroom feel as big as possible, one step at a time!

1. Add Open Shelves

Open shelves help you keep countertops free from clutter and add to your bathroom theme

Closed cabinetry can take up a ton of room, especially in a small bathroom. When you need storage but you don’t know where to start, it’s time to deploy one of our favourite interior design tricks: Add open shelves!

Add a few above the toilet, or beside the sink. Put some on the wall by the door, or near a window. In any location, they’ll look bright and airy.

Of course, they’ll look even better if your cosmetics, toiletries, and other accessories aren’t strewn about aimlessly. Use small, decorative containers to keep all of your essentials hidden away but still within reach.

2. Use a Clear Glass Shower Door

With some types of showers, your only option is to install a shower curtain rod. If this applies to your bathroom, choose a curtain that’s bright, white, and simple. You can even find ones in lightweight, gauzy fabric to help the room feel more spacious.

However, if you have the option, a clear glass shower door is always a smart way to trick the eye into thinking the bathroom is large. Practically invisible, it blends into the room and doesn’t take up hardly any space. This is a great idea to keep in mind if you’re planning a bathroom renovation soon!

3. Add an Oversized Mirror

Mirrors create an illusion of and make the space feel more open

In a tiny bathroom, anything oversized might sound out of place. However, we’re willing to make an exception in this case. Not only do mirrors reflect light, but their reflections can also skew proportions, making the room look wider, taller, or longer than it is.

When installing your mirrors, choose areas where they can reflect the room’s best assets. For instance, if you want to showcase a beautiful piece of art, hang a mirror opposite that wall. The same applies to a special window view or a standout shower that deserves special attention.

If you really want to expand the look of a room, add two mirrors that directly face one another. This gives the impression of a never-ending room, though it can be a little dizzying to look at on a regular basis!

4. Choose Wall-Mounted Lights

Wall mounted lights not only look great, but also create a larger feeling space

While a dramatic, ceiling-mounted light fixture can be gorgeous, it can also take up too much space in a small bathroom. Small, wall-mounted sconces are best, especially slimmer, streamlined models that tuck neatly next to a mirror.

Of course, if you really want to save space, you can simply install overhead recessed lights. These require virtually no space and blend into the ceiling for a seamless appearance. When choosing shades for your sconces, pick colours that complement your design scheme or stick with simple, light-coloured neutrals.

A Small Bathroom Can Be Big on Style

If you have a small bathroom, it’s easy to transform it with the quick tricks above. Of course, if you want to add more physical space to your room, a renovation or remodel offers a more long-term solution.
